Christoforos Shipwreck
Christoforos shipwreck in Panormos gulf Skopelos!!!
After the redefinition of the Archaeological Site in the water in the bay of Panormos in Skopelos, one of the best preserved shipwrecks in the complex N. Sporades – the “CHRISTOFOROS” – is now accessible for diving. The wreck of a cargo ship 83 meters long – comes out on the sandy bottom of the bay of Panormos at a depth of about 40 meters.
In October 1983 the ship had to travel from Volos to Piraeus with a cargo of 2,600 tons of cement. The change of weather on the route was accompanied by a slope of 7 degrees to the right. After consultation with the captain and the owners with the Ministry of Merchant Shipping, the ship was transported to Panormos in Skopelos with the aim of rescuing it. The mooring of the ship was not possible and so it was decided to abandon it. Almost 35 years later, the wreck of “Christoforos” remains standing at the bottom of Panormos on the island of Skopelos. The depth at the top exceeds 40 meters.
Christopher, a truck with “black diamonds”
From 1852 (year of construction of the first metal steamship with propeller and water-ballast) until the 1930s (“flat-iron” trucks with retractable oven and telescopic masts were founded) and After World War II, “black diamonds” which are valuable to the growing industry have moved against their river bridges, under their low bridges and on new waterways. Thus, the development of the shipbuilding industry led to a new type of ship for the handling of coal, the “collier”.
The cargo ship “Christopher”, formerly “Thomas Hardie”, is a typical example of a collier.
Date of the cargo ship “Christoforos”
In January 1950, the “Thomas Hardie” truck (85 m long and about 13 m wide) was built in Scotland (Grangemouth Shipyard), and then from 1968 to 1975 traveled under the name “Birling”. in the Greek merchant fleet called “Christoforos”.
